Jamaicans dominated the final day of competition at the first Regional Youth Online Chess Championships (Under-18) hosted by Trinidad & Tobago. In the gold medal game, National Under-14 champion Darren McKennis defeated compatriot Jaden Shaw 5-3 in an entertaining final. Jamaica Tops 2019 CARIFTA Chess Champs for the third time!!

Willemstad, Curaçao: 22 April, 2019
We likkle but we Tallahwah.
Team Jamaica Chess fielded a small contingent of only 13 players, and none in the U20 Absolute section at the 8th staging of the Junior CARIFTA Chess Championships, yet they waltzed away with top team honours over Trinidad & Tobago & Surinam.
Jamaica Struck Gold in two official Categories U12 Absolute Jaden Shaw, and U16 Female Raehanna Brown.  Silvers were won in U12 Female Zaina O’Connor and U20 female Ashanti Blackwood. Bronze medals went to U12 female Laila Griffiths, U16 Female Adani Clarke, and U16 Abs Darren McKennis. We also won medals in the un-official age groups, U10 Female Zaina O’Conner won silver, in U10 Abs Cameron Coe earned Bronze, U12 Fem Laila Griffiths mined Gold as did Jaden Shaw in U12 Abs. Raehanna Brown won Gold in U14 female, while Darren McKennis got Silver in U14 Abs. Adani Clarke picked up another Gold in U16 Female, while Nicholas Lyn gained a bronze in U16 Abs. Finally Ashanti Blackwood got the Gold in U18 female.
Also playing well but missing the podium were Gabriella Watson, Aliyah Yankana  and John & Amy Stephenson.
NM Mikhail Solomon was Head of Delegation and Official Coach. There were 7 parents whom accompanied the delegation.
This was Jamaica’s third team title but first overseas, having won the 2nd staging as host in 2013 and again the 6th as host in 2017.
In this the Jamaica Chess Federation’s Golden Jubliee 50 years since our founding Feb 18th, 1969 this is a Grand birthday Gift. Congratulations!!

JAMAICA STUPENDOUS AT 43RD CHESS OLYMPIAD  IN BATUMI, GEORGIA!!

Jamaica had yet another unbeaten day at the 43rd World Chess Olympiad being held in Batumi, the second largest city in Georgia, once part of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
As play returned in today’s sixth round, after yesterday’s rest day, Jamaica’s “Chess Queens” played stupendously to draw 2-2 with Bangladesh - a team ranked 39 places ahead of the West Indians!. Read more.

 

JAMAICA DOMINANT IN ROUND 5 OF 43RD CHESS OLYMPIAD - BATUMI, GEORGIA!!

Both Jamaican teams were successful in frenetic round 5 action at the 43rd Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia. The women's team defeated its second straight higher rated opponents, the Dominican Republic 2 1/2 - 1 1/2 with WCM - elect Krishna Gray (the reigning Jamaica Women's champion), CM Rachel Miller and debutante WCM Adani Clarke all drawing on boards 1, 3 and 4, respectively. JAMAICA'S WOMEN "UPSET" NIGERIA AT 43RD WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD IN BATUMI, GEORGIA

Jamaica's Women's team registered its second win after four rounds with a 4-0 demolition of the much higher rated Nigerian team. The women from "..the land of wood and water" rebounded from their loss to Tajikistan in the previous round behind wins from Krishna Gray, Ariel Barrett, Adani Clarke and Margoe Williams, respectively. The margin of victory was especially surprising as Marcus Garvey's young women were outranked on all four boards. ..Read more..

 

 

JAMAICA REGISTER "PERFECT" WINS IN SECOND ROUND PLAY AT 43RD CHESS OLYMPIAD IN BATUMI, GEORGIA

At approximately 7 pm local (Batumi, Georgia) time after roughly 4 hours of play, Jamaica's FM Ras Malaku Lorne defeated Gambia's CM Ousainou Garber to complete Jamaica's 4-0 rout of the men from Banjul!

The 28th staging of the Pan American Youth Festival will take place in San Jose, Costa Rica June 30 to July 7, 2017.  The event brings together one of the largest and strongest contingents of young chess players (up to 18 years) in the Western Hemisphere.  This year the Costa Rican Federation will host GM Susan Polgar as the special guest for the event, a former women’s world champion, and famous chess coach and author.  A series of workshops, simultaneous games and book-signings will be organised. CAC Panama Youth Festival , Panama ,Aug. 9-17th, 2017. 

The 2017 Youth Chess Festival of Central America and the Caribbean will be staged in Panama City, Panama between August 9 and August 17, 2017.  The CAC typically attracts Federations from all over the Americas, and was held last year in Caracas Venezuela. The tournament is a nine round Swiss (or Round Robin depending on number of participants) format, with pace of play at 90 minutes plus 30 second increments.  Trophies and Titles can be won in 12 age and gender categories.  In 2015, Jamaica sent a large contingent to Port of Spain Trinidad, and came away as the tournament champions.  Several young Jamaicans also gained FIDE titles..read more
