REPORT 2 - AYUSH JAIN TAKES CAMERON OPEN

ayush Jain convincingly won the 20th staging of the Frederick Cameron Open Chess Tournament 2023 played on December 16 and 17 at Calabar High School. The six-round event was played in four sections: the Open section, U1600 Absolute, U1300 Absolute, and U1300 Female. The annual event is named in honour of Jamaica's Hall of Fame recipient, former Jamaican International and Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF) treasurer and president, Frederick Cameron.

Ardenne High's Jain won the Open section with 5.5 points from six games, the only blemish being a draw with rising star Angelus-Seren McDonald of St Catherine High.

John Stephenson (Wolmer's Boys' High), one of Jamaica's outstanding juniors, was second with 5 points and Nathan Hare (Adult) was third on tie-break with 4 points. St Jago Nathaniel Hope also scored 4 points in finishing fourth.

The top female player in the Open section was Amy Stephenson, of Wolmer's Girls High, who finished with 3.5 points.

The best U1600 Absolute player was Jaden Foreshaw (St Jago High) who won on tie-break with 5 points. Second went to Ronak Shergil (Campion College), who also had 5 points. Glory Murphy was third with 4.5 points, with Arena Candidate Master Christopher Davis finishing fourth with 4 points.

 

REPORT 1

Jamaica will host its annual "Frederick Cameron Chess Open" in honor of one of the Jamaica Chess Federation’s legendary administrators and Chess Players, and one of the founding fathers when the Federation was formed in 1969.

The 2023 Frederick Cameron Chess Open 2023 will have three sections and be played OTB (Over-The-Board) at The Calabar High School in Kingston, Jamaica.

Open Section : Saturday, December 16th and Sunday December 17th, 2023 at 9:00am

Intermediate Section (FIDE Under 1600): Saturday, Detember 16th & Sunday December 17th, 2023 at 9:00AM

Amateur Sections (Under 1300 ABS & FEM) : Saturday only , December 16th at 9:00AM (One day)

The Tournament, formerly called the Christmas Open, was renamed in 2003 in honour of the Mr. Cameron who served as Treasurer for 25 years, and was elected as President in 1994.

Over the years he served in different administrative capacities including being an arbiter for numerous tournaments and playing an integral role in enabling Jamaica to become a member of World Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1972.

Mr. Cameron, a Calabar High School Old Boy, represented his country on Jamaica,s first ever National team and on subsequent teams over the years.

He was inducted into the JCF Hall of fame in 2017.
