CM Miller Third at CAC Under 20 Girls Chess Championship

Jamaica’s number two ranked female player, Candidate Master (CM) Rachel Miller, continued her effort to garner much needed international experience, when she copped third-place at the 2017 Central American and Caribbean Championship for Under 20 Girls. Miller’s teammate and former schoolmate, Sheanel Gardner, finished tied for 7th (8th on tiebreak).

Miller got off to an excellent start with four wins from her first four games, which included a win over the top seed and defending champion, Woman International Master (WIM) Karla July Fernandez Rivero of Cuba, in round 4.

Miller however, lost her fifth-round match to the eventual winner, Trinidad and Tobago’s WFM Gabriella Johnson. Miller then suffered another significant setback, when she was defeated in the penultimate round 8 by her teammate Gardner.
At the end of the championship, which took place from June 22 to June 27 in Barbados, Miller was in third place with 6.5/9, behind Johnson 8/9 and Fernandez Rivero 7.5/9.
Jamaica’s participation in the Championship was made possible by the Sports Development Foundation and the Kasparov Chess Foundation.
