National Master Shreyas Smith of Calabar High won the 2016 edition of the NM Robert Wheeler Chess Open with a perfect six points from six games, ahead of FM Malaku Lorne who placed second with 5 points.

The tournament which concluded on Sunday at the PCJ auditorium, was sponsored by the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica, the Liguanea Chess Club, the end game chess club, and organized by the Jamaica Chess Federation.

The tournament which ran for four days and saw over 90 players competing in three sections, started at the Liberty School on Thursday may 19th, 2016 and concluded at the PCJ Auditorium on May 22nd 2016.

In the Open division, Smith, who has the distinction of being the highest rated schoolboy in the history of Jamaican chess, won with a perfect six points from as many games and one full point ahead of FM Malaku Lorne who ended with 5 points. In third place on tie break ahead of Ian Wilkinson who also also ended on 4.5 points.

Intermediate Section


The Intermediate section of the tournament was won by Armani Dyer from Kemet Masai Academy, with 6 points . Brandon Lobban from U.W.I. was second with 5.5 points and in 3rd place was Kerron Patterson from St. Catherine High who ended the Tournament with 5 points.

Amateur Section

The Amateur section was won by Khatray Cato of St. Catherine Primary with 6 points and in second place was Cameron Coe of Hillell Academy on 5 points while Alex Wallace from Jamaica College was placed 3rd also on 6 points.

The Robert Wheeler Chess open is a premiere annual event on Jamaica Chess Federation's calendar and is named after National Master Robert Wheeler ,one of Jamaica's Chess Federation founding members. NM Robert Wheeler has has won the National Chess Championships on six occasions since 1975, and is the current secretary of the Jamaica Chess Federation.

THE Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF) will be staging the 2016 edition of the NM Robert Wheeler Chess Open this month Starting Thursday May 19th, 2016 at the the Liberty Academy on 32 Hope road at 6pm.

For the Open Section, Round one will begin at 6pm on Thursday May 19th at Liberty and Round 2 will be on Friday May 20th also at 6pm, at the PCJ Auditurium. at Trafallgar rd. in Kgn.

The tournament will resume on the weekend on Saturday May 21 at the Liberty Academy on 32 Hope road with round 3 of the Open section starting at 9am and Round 4 starting at 2pm.

Round one of The Intermediate and amateur sections will begin on Saturday at 9am.

The Tournament will come to a close on Sunday may 22, 2016 with rounds 5 and 6 of the Open Section and the intermediate section being held at the PCJ Auditorium.

Round 5 of the open section will start at 8:30am.
